It wasn't too long ago that new Ubuntu releases were major happenings in the Linux world, as it was the default Linux distribution for many, both old and newcomers, in the desktop Linux space. Another very real issue is that, with Google hidding/eliminating the "news" tag, and allowing AI to manipulate its algorithm so that any site can pretend to be a news outlet, more people will gravitate to reading "known" news outlets exclusively--CNN, MSNBC news, ABC news, WaPo and...NYT.

I know it takes a while to find the source code (if it still exists) and get review & clearances for everything. I wonder if (in the meantime) Microsoft would be open to sharing classic DOS stuff as "gratis"?
They did this with a few things, like Word for DOS 5.5 — although I can't find that on the website anymore.
For example, Bricklin shared Visicalc for free. TRIUS posted the activation code for AsEasyAs. Embarcadero shared the Borland Turbo compilers, etc

I was a longtime DOS user, ever since PC-DOS on the IBM PC and PC-XT. I've written elsewhere that MS-DOS 5 was (to me) like an entirely new DOS. Everything was wonderfully updated, it was a huge deal. QBASIC, DOSSHELL, .. everything just felt more *modern* than previous versions.
I wrote my first DOS tools (some of which later became FreeDOS tools) in QuickC.
If these ever went open source, I'd be so happy!
@Tedspence lol that post was inspired by this one actually but I didn't wanna bug anyone by sending them an @

well... I just... um... WOW.
This is actually HUGE for the retro community! Like... monumental! Because this is recognition.

(not trying to drag down, just asking: Is 3.3 open sourced yet?)
(while I'm asking, any chance of 5.x and/or 6.x?)
Would be cool to see what I'd need to do to port it back to the PC-9801
@mirabilos A reasonable chunk of GW-BASIC was released a few years back - I remember reading an OS/2 Museum post about trying to work out which OEM versions it corresponded to, which mentioned the OEM-specifc bits were sadly missing. But there must have been a 'generic' version of that code for the retail versions of MS-DOS to include...

@Methylcobalamin 😂😂 He would NEVER.
Seriously, what would he even run on if he couldn’t threaten us with Trump that’s all he does?? That’s what the Democrats do, “vote for us or will let them abuse you even harder”
The DOJ had 4 years, plus previously gathered evidence to convict Trump and they just sat on their hands.
The current criminal trial goes back to a crime Michael Cohen has already been in prison over 3 years for.
The DOJ is dragging their ass.
@ariaflame @Methylcobalamin PATIENCE?!? These people stormed the goddamn capital and vandalized it when their president had an EO that called for a mandatory 10 year minimum sentence for vandalizing federal property.
The guy running the post office vandalized federal property and violated court orders, and this weak ass people pleaser president can’t even manage to get him out of his job so we can get mail on time so millions of people didn’t lose Medicaid when this old fool declined to veto ending the public health emergency early.
Have you noticed we are still in a public health emergency? Have you heard that Rick Bright won’t even drink milk anymore because the bird flu Biden has been ignoring his entire term has been in mammals for a while. It’s probably already in your children, but just be patient, he’ll care about people over profits one of these days. Just be patient. Have your kids drink more milk. If they get sick just send them to school it’s fine
What should we be patient about??
3.5 years later he can’t even get rid of the guy destroying the post office. Because he doesn’t want to. Because marginalized people vote by mail or absentee. And he wants to eliminate us from this country.
#GenocideJoe destroyed the post office as part of #Project2025 and you think if we just wait quietly longer he’s going to get the DOJ to do anything about the fascists he is actually working with?
Oh honey, honey.
@threenotch oh I know disabled people don’t matter to you guys but he’s actually trying to kill us, and we are the largest marginalized group in America
But I am very happy that people who can afford to have Wi-Fi can have Wi-Fi now. It’s kind of a necessity in 2024. Now they can spend more money! That’s the most important thing right? They can buy stuff from Amazon now! Life is good
Weird that it took so long. Almost as if this is a setup for the DNC to claim they actually did anything, just in time for Trump to overturn them before they take effect... after they deliberately throw the election.
They've been fixing the primary even more blatantly than 2016 to eliminate opposition, because they insist on reinstalling a nominee who polls say will lose.
Maggie Maybe reshared this.
@MySideIsHumanity nobody wonders why it’s taking him four years and he still can’t get rid of the fascist in the post office
It’s because Project 2025 will be a lot easier to roll in because it has already started. Biden is fine with it he just wants the slow roll.

My big takeaway after listening to the SCOTUS arguments on Trump's "absolute presidential immunity" claim, it is that there is literally no act by a Republican president at least -- not using the military to kill their opponent or even staging a coup. bribery or anything else -- that Kavanaugh, Alito, Thomas and likely Roberts would deem illegal. They are monarchists pure and simple... at least when it comes to Republican presidents. Notably, Kavanaugh started his career working for KEN STARR.

The Chinese delivery giant Meituan flies drones between skyscrapers to kiosks around the city. I went to see how it works.Zeyi Yang (MIT Technology Review)
That drone delivery is much more limited than what Amazon promised. Rather than delivery to your doorstep, it goes to a limited number of pickup kiosks near big buildings. Simplifying the task that way makes it much more practical.

I figure at least some of those things shall happen, just not with those companies. AGI is of course never going to happen but drone-based delivery is already a thing without Amazon.
