I didn't join the PC world until 1994 when Windows 3.x/DOS 6.x were new. Even from my corner of the computer universe I heard about how "bad" DOS 4.0 was initially. OS/2 Museum does a detailed history of it coinciding with its source release. #ComputerHistory #history #Retrocomputing https://www.os2museum.com/wp/dos/dos-4-0/

I remember going to an event where Bill Gates himself was pushing what became Windows. Except it was vaporware. So he used... a Mac. I nearly died laughing.

Back in my day the disc drives were actual giant discs!

in reply to Jodi K

@Jodi K I'd love to see video of that! I was just watching a video on the history of Excel. They talked about some presentation at Tavern on the Green announcing the product and demoing it. I would have loved to see video of that too.

Microsoft open sourced MS-DOS 4.00 yesterday, under an MIT license. This joins v1.25 and v2.0 already released 6 years ago.

https://github.com/microsoft/MS-DOS

MS-DOS 4.x is... complicated. There was a 4.0 with multitasking ("MT-DOS") and a later one without. Both report themselves as "MS-DOS Version 4.00". The code on GiHub seems to be the non-multitasking version.

I highly recommend reading through the OS/2 Museum's posts on DOS history:

MS-DOS 4.00 (non-multitasking) is available on PCjs Machines, so you can have the experience right in your browser. The full experience, as you have to install it from floppy first (it's easy). 😎

https://www.pcjs.org/software/pcx86/sys/dos/microsoft/4.00/

Multitasking MS-DOS 4.0 is also available (no need to install first). Feels like an alternate timeline to be able to run VisiCalc, WordStar, and a CLI concurrently under DOS. Sad it didn't get a v5.0.

In hindsight it's obvious why multitasking MS-DOS was a technological dead end. At the very least it was still DOS, with its 640KB of conventional memory limitations.

Just look at these two screenshots of Commander Keen running under PC-DOS 3.00 (1984) and multitasking MS-DOS 4.00 (1986) on the same PCjs emulated IBM 5170...

@techambr just uploaded a great video about the Voodoo 1 accelerator by #3DFX! I love these cards.. they are such a core memory of the early days of 3D gaming on the PC! Please give it a watch? #retro #vintage #gamingpc https://youtu.be/-yafzmreZtQ

@techambr The missing piece of my DOS retro PC. Way beyond what I can afford to drop these days, but maybe one day I’ll find one at random.
in reply to mos_8502 :verified:

@mos_8502 The only way I've ever been able to find them is if they're included with a computer I'm buying.
in reply to Ron's Computer Videos🖥️📼

I always look at the old tower PCs in thrift stores for the specific port layout of the Voodoo card.
in reply to Ron's Computer Videos🖥️📼

Voodoo 1 was my first 3D card, too. I even got it to run in Linux, with GLQuake, and there was also a hack for X11 to have OpenGL apps run in a window by copying the framebuffer to the 2D card (the Voodoo 1 could only do fullscreen 3D on its own VGA output).

Ubuntu 24.04 LTS released

It wasn't too long ago that new Ubuntu releases were major happenings in the Linux world, as it was the default Linux distribution for many, both old and newcomers, in the desktop Linux space. These days, Ubuntu release hit a little different, with Canonical's focus having shifted much more to the enterprise, and several aspects of the distribution being decidedly unpopular, like the s

Following the NYT closely for over a year now, a picture is emerging:

Biased coverage leads back to the biases of one man, publisher A. G. Sulzberger.

The NYT is resistant to correcting errors.

The NYT relies on its reputation as the paper of record to avoid accountability.

Today on Assigned, a story in Politico, and a peek behind the curtain:

Saw a post the other day, where the library had repurposed the Dewey cards with seed packets. You “borrow” the seeds, and replace them after letting a small portion of the harvest go to seed.

So far this week...

The FTC banned the use of noncompete clauses.

The DOL strengthened overtime rules.

The FCC restored #NetNeutrality.

The DOT expanded protections for airline passengers.

This is what it looks like when the government works on behalf of the people.

in reply to Robert Reich

“protections for airline passengers”?? You mean their MONEY, right? Nobody actually cares about the passengers, but I do appreciate that their credit cards will get the money back if their tickets are canceled. Because we know that’s the most important thing here, the banks and how they feel about it.

@mediageek it doesn't have an obvious model number- it does use a tube in the viewer though

My big takeaway after listening to the SCOTUS arguments on Trump's "absolute presidential immunity" claim, it is that there is literally no act by a Republican president at least -- not using the military to kill their opponent or even staging a coup. bribery or anything else -- that Kavanaugh, Alito, Thomas and likely Roberts would deem illegal. They are monarchists pure and simple... at least when it comes to Republican presidents. Notably, Kavanaugh started his career working for KEN STARR.

There was no drone delivery future. There was never going to be a drone delivery future.

Just like there was never going to be self-driving Uber taxis. Or Amazon Go supermarkets on every corner. Or hyperloops. Or earth-to-earth space travel on SpaceX rockets. Or level-five full self driving Teslas.

Just like there will not be a general artificial intelligence ChatGPT in the next couple of years.

They were all scams designed to lure dollars from investors and generate good PR.

Nothing more.
