With nearly 5,000 cases reported so far this year — and concerns about a new strain — the Democratic Republic of Congo is considering the declaration of a public health emergency. #press

@Incognitim But they LOVE to talk about deporting 11MIL people like they could just wave a wand and people would disappear.

WE know that that isn't at ALL how things go down. US Govt. agents under Lump deported a whole bunch of ACTUAL AMERICAN CITIZENS to Mexico, bc when you give psychopaths a badge, a gun, and some power, they go fucking gaga. They deported whoever they FELT like deporting.

in reply to thepoliticalcat

@Incognitim Families will once again be torn apart. Neighbours will cry that they didn't want THEIR neighbour deported, just those OTHER dark-skinned people. Employers will face a wave of labor shortages that will leave them unable to produce whatever makes them rich. Kids will lose one or both parents, may have to relocate, have their schooling interrupted. I really hate these people. They just want to hurt others SO BAD.

Interesting idea that frames rich countries as having a "climate debt" to poor coutries:

"The economist Fadhel Kaboub suggests a way out: the World Bank and IMF could lend money to historical polluters to help them pay for their #ClimateDebt to poor nations. "

(But when Keynes proposed it in a different context, the US vetoed it).

US says military battalions with the IDF committed "gross human rights violations" against Palestinian civilians in the West Bank.

However, the battalions "will remain eligible for U.S. military aid because of steps Israel says it's taking to address the problem."

The administration assessment was outlined in an undated letter by Blinken to Mike Johnson obtained by ABC News.

I'd say "inconceivable" except that unbridled support has been going on for a long time. There is something wrong with our foreign policy when aid to Ukraine is heavily questioned and takes months to pass with great effort while aid to the current Israeli government is not, especially given the suffering inflicted on Ukraine versus that inflicted by Nethanyu and his government.

Well, I guess you know that whatever's happening on the political surface is just the performance for various audiences for various purposes.

Just ask Chomsky if you want to know what's really going on with US geopolitics 🙂

If we can be partners with Saudi Arabia with way more human rights violations per person there is no reason why we can't with China other than because of xenophobia.

I know not everyone has the freedom to do this, but there have been two times in my life when I didn’t get paid on time, and both times I told them wow I’m really sorry but I don’t actually have enough gas money to come to work tomorrow. I’ll be in as soon as payroll hits though.

The first time it happened they were really mad about it and they figured out a way to fire me later on that month. I got a new job on my way home from work so it was no big deal.

The second time it happened the owner of the company wrote me a personal check for $100 and I just had to pay him back when payroll hit. I was kind of mad about that, I was looking forward to taking the day off.

in reply to Maggie Maybe

most people wouldn’t do this because they would be embarrassed to say they would run out of gas. But I was not. They don’t pay me enough to not have to worry about running out of gas and they should hear that.

Punch cards used to be a key part of computing. The IBM 1402 Card Reader/Punch (1959) could read or punch hundreds of cards a minute. But the punch at https://twitter.com/ComputerHistory stopped punching the first 16 columns. An explanation of the punch unit and how we fixed it... 1/9

reshared this

in reply to Ken Shirriff

A punch card holds 80 characters, one per column. The holes in each column represent the character. Cards can be punched manually with a typewriter-like keypunch. Or the computer can punch cards at high speed through an attached reader/punch. 2/9
in reply to Ken Shirriff

There is no intelligence in the punch: 80 wires from the computer drive 80 electromagnets in the punch, punching a row of the card at a time. The punch supplies -20 volts to the electromagnets and the computer pulls the appropriate wires to ground at the right time. 3/9
in reply to Ken Shirriff

The electromagnets aren't powerful enough to punch the hole. Instead, a powerful electric motor drives a metal "bail", stopping just before the sharp punch. The electromagnet holds an "interposer" tab in between, causing the bail to force the punch through the card. 4/9
in reply to Ken Shirriff

The punch mostly worked, but why didn't it punch the first 16 columns of a card? The IBM 1401 computer is a decimal machine, so 10 failing columns would make sense, not 16. And the cables in the punch were in groups of 20. So 16 failures was a mystery. 5/9
in reply to Ken Shirriff

I checked the computer's driver boards; each board has flip-flops to drive two coils. Like all the 1401's circuitry, the boards used germanium transistors. Silicon hadn't caught on yet. The boards were pulling the lines to ground okay, but I didn't see -20V from the punch. 6/9
in reply to Ken Shirriff

We checked the punch and it was generating -20V pulses correctly. So where were they getting lost? By measuring continuity at various points, we determined that the problem was on the 1401 computer side. 7/9
in reply to Ken Shirriff

A thick cable connects the 1402 punch to the 1401 computer with 80 wires for the electromagnets. Inside the computer, "paddle cards" connect these wires to the computer's circuits, in groups of 16. I spotted a paddle card that had come loose. This was our problem! 8/9
in reply to Ken Shirriff

Pushing the paddle card back into place fixed the punch. An easier fix than most! Now we can use the punch to create new card decks for demonstrations. You can see the system in action on Wednesdays and Saturdays https://twitter.com/ComputerHistory in Mountain View, CA, so stop by. 9/9
in reply to Ken Shirriff

First parse of that had me reading the Twitter.com still used punch cards. And nothing would surprise me about Twitter.

I remember in 2020 in my city, police were extremely pissed off about covid-aware protestors who chose to protest in their neighbourhoods rather than travel into central.

Central city districts are hostile to us. The roads are easily blocked, there aren't as many alleys and buildings to escape through, cameras are everywhere and there aren't as many witnesses. By contrast, residential districts are full of routes and hiding places and the cops will be seen if they decide to split someone's skull open.

A thousand little protests in residential neighbourhoods was their nightmare.

Quite the mind fuck being an American Jew and descendant of Holocaust survivors right now, as nazis and republicans call Jewish protesters “antisemitic.” I don’t blame anyone for being confused by it all. Just know that your Jewish friends have been angry about it for a long time. And remember that anyone claiming to speak for all Jews probably isn’t.

We have long watched as the worst people use us as an excuse to enact their power fantasies. Please don’t believe them when they do.

I admit I'm one of the confused people. As a lefty who's been against the settlements and general authoritarian side of Israel and who thinks Palestinians deserve a state, I was frankly shocked by anyone on the left defending the Oct 9 massacre. I didn't expect that to be ok with anyone -- anyone on the left, anyone with an ounce of humanity -- let alone be defended as necessary.

If we are somehow putting that aside, then I just don't understand the current demands.

in reply to Jorge

@jorge I’m with you.

I have had to learn the hard way that a lot of my compatriots on the left crave violence as much as people on the right. It’s fucking scary.
