you know... it wasn't until today that it really hit me that pets are family. Canada made legal history with a Golden Retriever at the center of a custody battle.

i think all the time about all the pets i grew up with; especially Tiger, our German Shepherd. he was like our dog brother. we were his herd.

pets are family. we should cherish them as such.

@yes, it's me, liza 🇵🇷 🦛 🦦 I'm always stunned when I realize that many view them as a status symbol or a possession and not a family member. Pets are commitment. If you can't commit then never own one, its not fair to them at all.

@anubis2814
All too many people — mostly white cis het men — treat spouses and children the same way

sometimes I am stunned to be reminded that there are people who don't get that animals are also people. With their own opinions, personalities and needs. They don't think like us, but they have their own experience of the world

i always knew that @cat_news @anubis2814 i’d have full conversations with my dogs and cats. our parrot... well, mami’s parrot was smart AF. my horse & chickens too.

it’s that i get now why i mourn them, like i mourn my mom, dad and brother. they were all family and i think i haven't processed the grief. after all these years, i miss them so much. am so grateful to have raised and cared and cherished them.

now i know i have to grieve them, because i loved them & they loved me.

@anubis2814 it is deeply unfair that we must outlive our pets. But, I feel confident in saying that you should take some comfort in remembering that, from their perspective, for their entire lifetime, you gave them the best life you could

Some scientists are emerging from under the behaviorist rock.

Not to mention the cultural one.

"Recent changes to B.C. legislation mean pets no longer treated as mere property in custody disputes"

Very nice!

I loved all my dogs and always feel guilty thinking about chosing which one was my favorite. They were all my favorite. Especially, Brandy. No, Midnight. Except probably, really, Corky. No, Brandy. No, each of them. So different but all always loving.

@Mary625 I go through this as well with my two that I bonded with and then I feel guilty about not being a good father for the ones as a kid but I was a mess as a kid and didn't know how to bother with anything

It's a little easier for me because it's apples and oranges with the boy and the girl They are such different experiences
