Something new is coming from @mike!
The creator of Friendica, Hubzilla, and Zot is creating a Fediverse Identity Manager. It is 70% complete.
I don’t know what this will be like exactly. But because @mike is the fellow who’s also brought nomadic identity to the Fediverse, I suspect this will be a big deal.

in reply to Chris Trottier • • •I have a really strong suspicion that @mike’s work with identity is going to become more important on the Fediverse.
More and more people realize Fediverse identity is important to push forward.
Now I don’t know the full details about his Fediverse Identity Manager. But I can’t wait to find out!

in reply to Grassroots Joe • • •@joeinwynnewood I may be wrong, but I hope it’s a tool that allows you to store your various Fediverse identities in one spot, and allow you to move from one server to another with ease.
Even better if it has a validator component that supplies green checks!

@mike says the Fediverse Identity manager will be able to link your various Fediverse identities together!
Which means your Mastodon account will be linked to your Pixelfed account which will be linked to your Akkoma account!
This is going to be awesome!

1. External identity manager: Helps you create and manage verified links.
2. Channel Manager: Will allow you to store your Fediverse identities and then "teleport" with them when needed
3. Channel Sources: Lets you re-publish any posts that arrive from certain connections. Anybody with a rel="me" relationship will automatically become potential channel sources

in reply to Chris Trottier • • •Okay, so what might @mike's post practically mean?
The Fediverse Identity Manager may provide you an easy way to validate your various Fediverse identities. John Smith on Pixelfed and John Smith on Mastodon are all the same person because they're provided with green checks.
It may also help you log into various servers more easily *through* the Fediverse Identity Manager.
Finally, if you want to send the same message to more than one validated account, you can do it in one place!

in reply to Chris Trottier • • •I really hope that @mike's Fediverse Identity Manager goes mainstream.
If it gets broad adoption on the Fediverse, it would be huge!

in reply to Chris Trottier • • •Would it be web only?
(If it has an API that others can implement and get that functionally I count as not web only, even though it’s up to each client app to implement it.)

in reply to Chris Trottier • • •About “Helping to log in through …” but its not a federated identity in the “saml” sense I think?
Like @SLURF did for their instance based on their OpenConext implementation (SurfConext) to provide access to all dutch vocational / higher education institutions?
In this case meaning one Fediverse instance providing authentication for others?

On Hubzilla and (streams), your account is not your identity. What's actually your identity is your channel. Each channel offers you at least the same as one Friendica account, but you can have multiple ones on the same account, and each one of them is a separate identity. Even the instance admin would have to do some SQL diving to be able to tell which channels belong to the same account. And if you've got more than one channel on the same account/instance, and you want to switch channels, you don't have to log out and back in.
If you go nomadic, you go nomadic for each channel separately, i.e. each channel can have clones on different instances. Obviously, this requires accounts on other instances. The accounts don't go nomadic, they don't have any content to go nomadic with. The channels do.

in reply to Wendell Bell • • •@Wendell Bell Not quite.
A Russian troll could create a Hubzilla channel, go nomadic on every last public Hubzilla instance and still be fairly easy to moderate. Even with so many clones. the channel would still have only one identity which is derived from the main instance where the channel resides. You block one, you block them all.
Of course, the Russian troll could switch main instances. But that'd mean re-connecting every last non-Hubzilla, non-(streams) connection because they all don't understand nomadic identity.
Unfortunately, there currently isn't a proper way to alert as many hub admins as possible at once so they can delete the channel from their hubs. Hubzilla has public groups/forums, even not-so-public ones, but you can't even count on all hub admins following the Hubzilla Support Forum. And many hubs don't even make clear who is the admin, much less give a link to the admin's channel.

(Also I’m more patient than what the typical micro-blogger seems to be. In fact I want things to move a bit slower. Measure twice type of a vibe.)
