Everyone should care about solving for "y" and any other unknown. The basics of solving for unknowns would prevent such misconceptions as "you can't prove a negative" when mathematicians and forensic scientists do it all the time. When you solve Sudoku puzzles, you do it all the time. It's important that you recognize exactly what it is that you're doing.
