So as of today Mastodon now has a US 501(c)3 non-profit entity to go along with their German corporate entity that appears to be losing its non-profit status for reasons the don't know yet. #mastodon #fediverse #news https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2024/04/mastodon-forms-new-u.s.-non-profit/

From my experience with #German #incorporation, it's extremely rulebound. I don't sense any malice by the govt of #Germany, just overbearing bureaucracy.

I like the fact #Europe has more rules in general than the #USA for #corporations. But there is a limit, and capricious bullsh** like taking away #Mastodon's #nonprofit status over, what I assume, is some tiny clerical error or minor rule discrepancy, is just embarrassing for Germany.

I agree I don't think there is any nefariousness going on. It's just a Kafkaesque bureaucratic nightmare they have to go through which may have no joy at the end.

dealing with German bureaucracy is pretty much the opposite definition of joy

@benroyce you can get the same here in the US. My rocket club incorporated as 501(c)3 this year, but we can not get a sales tax exemption in the state, since our educational activity does not fit their definitions. Even though we have a lot of trainings and launches for aerospace students and engineers at the university and many colleges. While at the same time the boy scouts qualify for the exemption... But yes, German bureaucracy can be a special kind of joy.

@carstenfranke
all you have to do is claim political activities and the IRS will cower in fear that GOP congresscritters will cry "deep state oppression!" when they apply normal rules to you
in reply to Carsten Franke

@carstenfranke please don't. I had no idea of your rocketry org and it sounds lovely. don't take advice from social media loudmouths! 😂

@benroyce your remark reminded me of some of the trump tax files. I think I remember one quote from an IRS memo where the auditor said they thought Trump owed $40 million in taxes, but it was not really worth going after that because he had aggressive lawyers and it would be a hassle to deal with them.

exactly

it's also why #the usa is stupid on #cult mafia sleaze like #scientology while countries like #germany treat them appropriately: the goons just literally infiltrated the #irs, and bullied the motherf***ing irs, which is rather impressive if not revolting:

The situation with right wing groups abusing 501(c)3 groups is even more pernicious than that, sadly. Which is saying a lot.

Congratulations. The IRS will eventually post information from the newly approved nonprofit organization on its web site but have you considered making it publicly available sooner? I imagine, for example, that the information from the 2022 annual report was translated to US currency in the Form 1023 application?

Unfortunately I didn't tag @Eugen Rochko or any of the other Mastodon doers on my OP so they probably didn't see this question. I'm not involved with Mastodon in any way. I'm just a very excited fediverse citizen from the Friendica side that is very happy to share their news to the broader world.
