It was around this time in ‘68 that LBJ announced he wouldn’t seek the nomination, FWIW

Supposedly LBJ made his decision after watching Walter Cronkite denounce the Vietnam War on the air. "If I've lost (Cronkite),then I've lost (America)."

@IveyJanette I remember being so happy about that, because of the war, and wanting Kennedy, I was 10. I was watching a little bw TV with my aunt, who was all for Nixon, but she didn't mind me disagreeing with her.

@lerxst And in this day and age of corporate conglomerates and studios owning networks. Cronkite would never be on the air today.

I don’t think the equivalent of a single respected voice like Cronkite exists in 2024 America.

The news media ecosystems of the 60’s became atomized infotainment zones flooded with shit, as “influencers” peddle opinions for clicks in return for traffic monetizable by corporate brands.

This is what I want. I want someone to tell Biden that he's lost, that his own stupid actions in an election year have put him outside a reasonable hope of victory. I want him to tap out and for us to get a candidate untainted by genocide. Probably at this late stage it would have to be someone with big name recognition. Sanders would make sense given his consistent opposition to arming Israel.

The parallels to LBJ are really striking to me in a lot of ways. He tried to do a lot of good for the country with stuff like his "great society" initiative, but it was his getting us deeper into the throes of Vietnam that he will always be remembered and that overshadows everything. That is what Biden feels like to me, a presidency that is now forever tainted by being the Arsenal of Genocide.

Info, it's unrealistic to expect a sufficient campaign in 50 states + inside of what's less than a year at this point. May to November ain't much time to proverbially change horses mid-stream for a country this big. Biden might be forever tainted, but try recruiting a better candidate in one month's time so that a new campaign can begin the following month. Lotsa luck with that.

It was tied to his dismal performance in the New Hampshire primary and Gene McCarthy's strong showing.

I remember watching LBJ go on national TV and say he would not run for reelection. 4 days later James Earl Ray murdered MLK Jr. Two months later RFK was murdered. Pretty traumatic times.....

Figgy, the original objection to Biden was his age, and I said then that anyone having a problem with Biden's age has a problem with a President Harris. You need to get used to the fact that there are Dems that don't want Biden because of Harris and that preceded the Israel matter. And we're talking about a political party that was once chaired by pro-Zionism Debbie Wasserman-Schultz. The "blue no matter who" is not accepted by Dems who recognize Israel's actions as genocidal, and it's not accepted by the Dems who have a problem with a President Harris.
