A few months ago I stopped crossposting from Twitter to Mastodon.

Why?

I discovered (as many of you have) that it's a completely different vibe here. Different people. Different habits. Different interests.

Zero algorithms.

And people here are more interested in deeper conversations.

Combined with the extra characters and (gasp!) actual editing capabilities, I'm making an effort to post unique content here that isn't just copied from Twitter.

LET'S GO!

Two rules here, post good stuff and be nice and you will grow. We are all equals and there is no way to jump to the head of the line by gaming the algorithm
in reply to Jason Evangelho

I really appreciate this move of yours. I usually stop following people who just cross-post.
Even though a fair share of my posts are the same both on Mastodon and Twitter, I've never done cross-posting. IMO the fact that you're willing to post the message manually is a sign that you're also ready to have interactions with your followers which is the essence for social media.
in reply to Jason Evangelho

That's an important realization. Took me a minute to get this myself. I've resolved to stop being that guy that jumps up and down in the crowd trying to get noticed, and instead add value in real conversations.
in reply to Jochen Lillich

It's because that realization goes against everything social media has beat into our heads for the last decade.

That likes and shares are some kind of valuable currency.

btw: @Sammy8806 the admin of our instance (layer8.space) is running a patreon to fund the operation. Currently it's at 8 patrons.
That could be better. Because we should not forget, that all this amazing infrastructure is run by volunteers who are frequently paying for it out of their own pockets.
So here is my appeal to everyone: check if you can support your local instance and do so (if you can afford it).

One more thought: I'm actually compelled to post LESS here, because I know the responses will typically be lengthier and thoughtful.

And there will be MORE of them, despite having a significantly smaller following here than on Twitter.

And so, I want to post less so that I'm able to actually respond to you and engage in a meaningful conversation.

(What @mmclark just said: the signal/noise ratio here IS excellent.)
in reply to Jason Evangelho

could you recommend how to get started here on Mastodon? I’ve just arrived and am having a hard time setting up a “group” of people/topics that fits my interests. I’m not even sure if this description applies to how Mastodon works.
in reply to Geoff

Start by following @feditips and visiting their site (https://fedi.tips). It's a great resource and will probably answer a lot of your questions.

Maybe #AskFediverse can recommend some intro videos for new people?
in reply to Jason Evangelho

I stopped crossposting as well!

TBH it just made less sense as time went on. This is its own space with its own purpose, and a different style than Twitter!

Looking forward to making the most of it!!
in reply to Schykle :teampixel:

Bravo! And btw congrats on your own instance, that's cool as hell.

Not speaking for him, but I think Schykle needs to do his own thing on the writing front. Build an audience on a platform that he owns and controls.

The only true failure is not even trying.

If you recognize a need, I say fill that need.

You can create it and self-host it, or use something like @mastohost

Looking forward to asking about your experience over coffee.

It is such a different vibe here, I never bothered to cross-post. Glad to be back :)
in reply to Jason Evangelho

I think you're right! It's hard as someone that just wants things to be set up for me and clean cut from the start.

Selfhosting has never been my jam, but more recently, after setting up this instance for myself too, I kinda want to have a little corner of the world for each of my passions.

#Mastodon seems to nail the social element.
#Pixelfed for my photography (still need a host)
And #WriteFreely for my writing!
in reply to Jason Evangelho

Feeling the same way. Less posting but more meaningful posting.
in reply to Jason Evangelho

Same! It's a completely different vibe. More about sparking conversation than laying down the One True Take.
in reply to Jason Evangelho

I love that you're here man. I'm really loving the lower key but deeper vibe here. This feels like the VIP lounge for all my fav peeps from Twitter
in reply to Jason Evangelho

I'm really liking the no algorithm thing here. I hope it stays this way.
