Well this is happening even faster than my worst case predictions. This is truly horrific. If the speed with which these same organization's coordinated efforts got "Don't Say Gay" bills through is an indication this will happen as early as next year if the GOP controls your state, local, or the federal legislature and executive offices. I know I sound like a broken record but if you vote in ways that give the GOP power (including not voting) in this election you are enablers of this shit plain and simple. There is no plausible deniability available to you. #uspoli https://prismreports.org/2022/06/22/nrlc-model-law-journalists-at-risk/

can't see all the language in that screenshot, but it almost looks like anybody hosting the content would also be guilty

So a site hosted in AWS and Amazon is responsible. Not that Amazon would ever have the principles, but it almost seems like it would take a company saying "this is so poorly written, we can't do business in your state" to get things changed

Because voting in gerrymandered districts doesn't have enough effect

Yeah the link is to the original article. It would also include journalistic organizations that cover it, and a whole host of other scenarios. It is very similar to how they have setup these "Don't Say Gay" and "Anti-CRT" bills. Essentially it's so they can stick their right wing lawfirms on them with frivolous lawsuits covered by the loose language. The mere fear of that scenario is silencing enough.

yes, but instead of censoring themselves, if media companies just blocked the states where these laws were passed, what effect would it have on the laws?

I know companies won't actually DO it because no company would give up that many customers so it is just a thought experiment

But how quickly would the laws be changed if something like Netflix was suddenly replaced with a message "As we are unable to comply with the recent laws in your state we are unable to provide you with service"
in reply to Tom Larrow

instead they censor everyone (which is what the law wants), or invest in technology to block certain content from certain states and pass the cost on to all customers

@Tom Larrow Very good question. These companies do that all the time for various country regions. To say all of this is leading to increased balkanization is an understatement. GOP Senator Josh Hawley said yesterday that is the game plan actually.
