Smaug doesn't sleep buried under gold. Nor is there anything like a mountain full of gold. RTFB!

Smaug

The original picture of Smaug drawn by Tolkien (cited in the link above) shows him sitting on a mountain of gold and jewels.

He claimed a Dwarven mountain fortress for the treasure the Dwarves had amassed within. It's described as a mountain full of treasures, which the meme calls a mountain full of gold.

It's not a mountain of solid gold for sure.

@Jess Nut Yep. That's a smart and quick reply. :-) Anyway, a mountain full of treasures is very different to a a mountain filled with treasures. There are for sure great treasures. But the local treasures Tolkien describes do not match with those described in rumors and songs. If I remember correctly, there is one huge pile of gold an treasure on which Smaug used to sleep.

There's also not an itemized list of all the treasures in the mountain so calling it 51.4 billion dollars is just a random number they picked to show it's a lot of money but still not anything compared to the top 10 richest.

It's about comparing them to dragons hording wealth for no purpose other than to own it. Smaug isn't leading that gold out to small business entrepreneurs at reasonable interest rates or investing in the community by funding arts and education programs. The uber wealthy do a few vanity projects but ultimately don't use their money for anything, benefit to society or otherwise.
