If I may posit a theory? Because they are Nazis, and that's how Nazis gain and retain power. Find a vulnerable minority, demonize them, blame society's ills on the minority in question. Then the "base" will give you whatever power you want, because you are "protecting us from them."

And as for the "base", and their need to hate? Othering a group increases group cohesion. In other words, they feel better about themselves in these admittedly uncertain times.

They don't fear the minority they persecute, they fear that they may be no different. Transphobes both lack an understanding of gender and aren't comfortable with their own expression, therefore create a strict mental hierarchy (i.e. toxic masculinity, TERF) to protect themselves, then justify same as protecting others.

Today it was something with "Freedom" in it. Except it was freedom to hate. And instead of subscribe to feed/care for children or wounded vets it was transphobic. Step right up and subscribe to hate!
