I would be more than happy to pay a one-time fee to have my identity verified on a social media platform. But what on earth justifies a continued monthly payment that? (And this is about Instagram, not Twitter, because Twitter "verification" doesn't even come with THAT haha.)

Especially if people don't get any extra features for the cost.

Other types of web services might benefit more from regular verification payments. For example, auction marketplace website (here in Finland) had a somewhat similar monthly payments... already ~22 years ago (and they still do).

It looks like many social media companies are at least considering to start charging a monthly subscription. Eventually. For all users.

Twitter is doing it in the most crude way, antagonizing everyone, Elon style, but... if it doesn't end horribly and quickly, I think the others will go for it. After all, major newspapers are fully behind paywalls now, they made it work.
