If the GOP won’t ban assault weapons, wouldn’t it be ok to pull all .223 & 5.56 ammunition off the shelves and only issue it to active, guard and reserve US military forces? Like well regulated militias! It’s probably going to take something crazy like that to reduce mass shootings.

@SrRochardBunson you’d also have to ban 300 BlackOut, 7.62x39mm, .50 Beowulf, 5.7x28mm and about 65 other rounds that you can chamber an AR-15 in.

Beyond that what is an assault weapon? Which part makes it assault? Most folks think of the military look but looks are just that…

If you want to effectively reduce mass shootings then you need to target magazine capacity. You can buy 100rd magazines. Easily.

Reduce capacity. Increase cost. Tax the shit out them. Make it hard.

@bleakfuture @SrRochardBunson CO has a pretty good law being debated. Includes firearms accepting high cap detachable magazines, rifles and shotguns with pistol grips or thumbholes, AR-platform pistols with or without braces, shotguns with high cap fixed or detachable tubes, and a number of other characteristics, pretty well undermining that “what’s an assault rifle” semantic bullshit.

It’s a good idea but I’m promoting a liability insurance requirement for gun ownership.

I would suggest primers, powder and cartridges too.

a while ago I was mulling over ammunition caps, like how much you could have on you, in your car, or store at home.

I ran it by a liberal friend of mine who currently owns some land and is a gun owner, but in his 20s he practically lived in a commune (group roommate house in inner SE Portland). He still is for gun licensing, training, registration, but the idea of restricting quantities of ammo practically made him livid. "Responsible gun owners should face...

@Urban_Hermit a friend had 10s of thousands of rounds.
They get a discount for bulk. $220 for a thousand 9mm on sale. Box of 50 is $20.

9mm isn't even really a hunting round. What you can legally do with that?...Fire at targets. And I can't even imagine how long you would have to fire at targets to use that much ammo up. That is just hoarder mentality at that point.

Thanks, I actually appreciate knowing that. It has been decades since I did any target shooting. I took up archery instead to scratch that itch.

...no restrictions" rhetoric. The problem is that everyone who owns guns thinks they are a responsible gun owner, until the day they have been pushed too far.

So I think pushing for ammo restrictions will lose the support of even moderate gun owners. Which is damn shame, because the problem is mass shootings and people bringing a backpack with 50 rounds anywhere except a gun range seems like a significant indicator.

@Urban Hermit @CopterDoctor I mean the problem isn't AR-15s, they are just the best plug and play rifle, that can use a wide range of bullets. Limiting the bullet type to purely hunting would end a lot of mass shootings.

@Urban_Hermit if ammo caps make him livid, how mad would he be if someone he loved was murdered by a mass shooter? I’d be more than livid, especially since some of those lives lost could’ve been saved by sensible legislation. Doing nothing isn’t working. The GOP says it’s a mental health issue, but refuse to put money into mental health care. I had friends who would shoot hundreds of rounds at the range. Plunking tin cans and pumpkins is more important than saving lives. It’s a damn shame.

I'm disappointed for him. He has two young daughters in a large, but rural school. This is the kind of place where this stuff happens, where everybody has guns and everybody has angry teens or dysfunctional young adults. In the highschool I went to, years after I graduated, a rural student was developing schizophrenia, and he shot his parents and then went to school and shot up the school. I used to live near a mall that had a random shooting incident. The...

....community college in the town where I went to middle school had a mass shooting. These incidents are too common.

The thing is though, I obviously can not convince him otherwise. I don't understand why, but I think it has to do with identity. He may want to identify with certain rural relatives or neighbors, and gun culture is part of that identity. And since we live in a Democracy we have to find a way to convince them, before tragedy does so.

@Urban Hermit @CopterDoctor I grew up in a rural school and that's where they are the least understanding of people who are different and I had fantasies about going though and killing my fellow students. Thank goodness i didn't have the internet of today back then, Its possible I could have been radicalized in some way. Or access to guns. The me of then was completely safe to eveyone around them, just isolated and not understood, add the cult like toxic masculinity of the internet and I shudder to think about where that could have gone.

I have also said the 2nd amendment says nothing about ammunition.
