I hear this cavalier 230 talk and I am immediately transported back to the mid 90s and with crystal clarity remember how much angst we had trying to run an online discussion board without it being a cesspit or getting ourselves sued.

@gpumoto I have organized quite a few protests. As the organizer I always knew that I had a responsibility to make efforts to keep them peaceful. That's the history of our first amendment right in the USA.
Hopefully, the jury won't side with the cop in this case, but I don't personally feel that the Supreme Court should have given a pass to allow political violence.

A YouTube video I started watching this morning. The impetus for that was apparently some strife in a FOSS project around the usual crap. I made the mistake of reading the comments even though I know better than to do that.
This was the most honest and sensible analysis of the things we are seeing with this streaming service. I subscribed it to be able to watch Lower Decks and, guess what... Is one of the services that has the least loyalty to its own products, it is unbelievable (the other is Max).
@factolvictor To be fair, I think all streaming services are struggling with content loyalty. Go on any forum discussing a Netflix price hike, and you’ll find legion of complaints about all the shows cancelled after S1 or S2. HBO at least has tried to circumvent that with miniseries, explicitly targeting a single season or a set number of episodes.
I think the issue lies with the fact that streaming companies’ objectives don’t align with viewers’.
After some digging in, I was able to debug the issue and work on a fix thanks to ChatGPT
Seriously, ChatGPT is a life saver, I'm not an ops person but I was able to use the tips it provided to diagnose the issue, and after learning a bit about GRUB and shit I was able to fix it properly.
I'll be paying more attention to kernel updates and implementing a new update procedure + adding another standby app server to prevent this in the future.

Perhaps I am missing a piece of information (and that's on me) but do you perhaps a staging or test server/environment setup? As in, a separate server/instance that gets OS/docker/whatever underlying system updates first, prior to it going on the live one?
If not, it might be something to look into. Having a staging environment can help catch these kinds of things. That said, it will cost some time and thus money
@ariadne Good question, we do have a separate DB server and once I finish migrating old local media to S3, I can add multiple app servers and a load balancer.
It do be kinda impressive that such a large fedi instance (using php) can scale this much on a DO VPS!
