someone called the cybertruck an "incel camino” and I've been laughing about it for hours
This entry was edited (7 hours ago)
in reply to Rebecca Watson

It took me a while to get it because I'm outside the USA and not really a car person.

There's a car called “El Camino”, if anyone's still stuck like I was.

in reply to Rebecca Watson

ouch! Too bad for El Camino, which was a very good idea of a vehicle that should never have vanished, but yeah, this is funny!

it is extremely funny to me that a lot of the people who want to slash or repeal #Section230 are the same people condemning #NPR's Katherine Maher for her past comments they think are "anti-First Amendment"
in reply to Molly White

in those comments she is actually describing the free speech protections afforded by Section 230 (although Rufo et al have ignored where she said those protections were "very important" and instead spun her comments as though she was criticizing it)

slashing or repealing 230 is the real anti-free speech issue here; certainly not Maher's comments supporting it

in reply to Molly White

I hear this cavalier 230 talk and I am immediately transported back to the mid 90s and with crystal clarity remember how much angst we had trying to run an online discussion board without it being a cesspit or getting ourselves sued.

It’s an example of how a sensible small idea (limited exposure to benign bugs might help with allergic reactions) became wrapped up in the American no pharma, only natural cult.

I think it’s fair to say American given their aggressive pharmaceutical approach and terrible food naturally created the backlash, but threw the baby out with the bathwater.

New in PN: It can be hard to remember now with the pandemic receding from view, but despite all the other horrors of the Trump presidency — family separation, stacking SCOTUS, the coup attempt — his mishandling of covid should on its own disqualify him from holding office ever again. https://www.publicnotice.co/p/trump-covid-response-revisited

maybe don't pull that thread too hard unless you're trying to turn people against the Fed Gov more broadly

Truth. Note 'deliberately', which is correct. Malignant narcissists feel no shame or empathy, and are sadistic.

Barr is the original US AG (under Bush1) who tried to force the Arkansas then-US attorney to "open" a fake investigation into Bill Clinton in October of 1992. Yep, the first "October surprise" was Barr's baby. It failed for one reason: the US attorney refused because he knew the evidence Barr was pushing was fake and it was too close to the '92 election. That US attorney was an honest man, a Republican, and knew it would cost him his career -- which it did. https://www.google.com/books/edition/The_Hunting_of_the_President/tIEqNExC7_4C?hl=en&gbpv=0

The big problem is that the people who are paying the costs are not the same who make money by keeping things as they are.

We're asking a transfer of money from rich people to poor people, and we can't have that.

This is why little will be done.

I was just browsing this page about the update to Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing project in 2012 https://news.microsoft.com/2012/01/12/at-10-year-milestone-microsofts-trustworthy-computing-initiative-more-important-than-ever/ and noticed the link to the Trustworthy website: http://www.microsoft.com/twc

I saw that link doesn’t work, so I put it in the Wayback Machine and found out the Trustworthy Computing website broke many years ago, and MS just left it broke.

reshared this

in reply to Kevin Beaumont

The last time I can find it working is around 2017. The first headline on the site contained a typo. It then broke in 2018.
in reply to Kevin Beaumont

I think what happened here is the Trustworthy Computing website was hijacked inside MS to become the “Trust Centre” website, as it has the same layout - except security was removed as a category from navigation (entire menu shown) and link broke.

Instead it’s essentially a marketing page about product upsell.

I feel bad for Charlie and Bret as they have a boulder to move up a cliff. There is a link to Microsoft Secure Future Initiative blog, at least, if you can find the site.

No, public schools are not liberal. They're schools. The WaPo's bothsidesism shifts its axis to legitimize extremists' premise. The proper perspective: Far-right extremists reject education:
They quit liberal public schools. Now they teach kids to be anti-‘woke.’ https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2024/04/15/they-quit-liberal-public-schools-now-they-teach-kids-be-anti-woke/
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

Sometimes I can instantly tell that an article can kill brain cells from just the headline alone, and this is one such instance. Who quits public school over supposed “liberal bias” (whatever that means to these morons)?
in reply to Jeff Jarvis

dunno. i think the 'proper perspective' would be that the far right is indoctrinating kids to think that the only perspective that matters is the one coming from rich, white people.

way worse than just a rejection of education, IMO

People don’t understand the fediverse.

Today’s exhibit: people on #Threads complain that it’s not good for news, example yesterday. We know that, because Meta has said over and over they de-emphasize news.

But that’s what the #fediverse is for! Somebody will build the worlds best news feed and you can subscribe right there from Threads (once they are done with their ActivityPub implementation) and any other fediverse application.

The comments on a video about solutions to solving political divide in FOSS includes scolding him about acknowledging that LGBT people do actually exists is being political really highlights where the problem lies and it isn’t with the openly LGBT members and their supporters. Nor is the solution buying into the “apolitical” solution of erasing the open existence of minorities either. Fuck that noise. #foss #OpenSource #lgbt #politics

This was the most honest and sensible analysis of the things we are seeing with this streaming service. I subscribed it to be able to watch Lower Decks and, guess what... Is one of the services that has the least loyalty to its own products, it is unbelievable (the other is Max).

#startrek #paramount #paramountplus #streaming

in reply to factolvictor

@factolvictor To be fair, I think all streaming services are struggling with content loyalty. Go on any forum discussing a Netflix price hike, and you’ll find legion of complaints about all the shows cancelled after S1 or S2. HBO at least has tried to circumvent that with miniseries, explicitly targeting a single season or a set number of episodes.

I think the issue lies with the fact that streaming companies’ objectives don’t align with viewers’.

@ariadne Good question, we do have a separate DB server and once I finish migrating old local media to S3, I can add multiple app servers and a load balancer.

It do be kinda impressive that such a large fedi instance (using php) can scale this much on a DO VPS!
