Edit: The US has used its veto to block Palestinian full membership of the UN. The UK & Switzerland abstained. All other 12 nations on the Security Council voted for Palestine.

Analysis

Leaked cables had showed the White House opposed Palestinian statehood, despite Biden’s pledge to support a two-state solution.

The US was lobbying nations to reject Palestinian membership at the UN on Friday in the hope of avoiding the need to use its veto.

By the middle of the century, global emissions from plastic production could triple to account for one-fifth of the Earth’s remaining carbon budget, an analysis has found.

The stunning new estimates from provide yet more evidence the plastic industry is “undermining the world’s efforts to address #ClimateCrisis”, said Heather McTeer Toney, executive director of the Bloomberg Philanthropies’ Beyond Petrochemicals campaign, which helped fund the new report.

Instead of banning tiktok, would it be better to amend section 310 of the Communications Act to include social media companies as "common carriers"?

I honestly don't know--I just know that there is plenty of precedent for banning foreign ownership of communications mechanisms.

So let's recognize sm as communications mechanisms and regulate them as we do other comms methods (radio in this case) instead of singling out one company?

@anubis2814 well, I would question whether the owners of TikTok are "socialists." They seem like your ordinary, garden-variety capitalists to me.
in reply to Doctor Historianess

@Doctor Historianess Yes but their Nation and government uses the word socialist, So by republican logic they are. Oddly, they don't have the same issue with India or Portugal which call themselves socialist nations in their constitutions

I feel that critters from German #folklore would be better known if they had snappier names. Or, in many cases, any names at all.

I know that the German language has a reputation for "having a word for everything", but the folk tales largely go for unnamed horrors. Which makes writing them up for #ttrpg monster manuals more difficult. 😉

That is because we live in a system of private property something that didn't exist for most of reality. We had personal property and the commons. If you live in the system you gotta follow the rules or get screwed.

From 2 years ago today.
Its so weird, when I was financially unstable before this new pay raise, I would spend more than I should then beat myself up for it. Now that I have a plan to get out of debt and no longer have to stress out about money, I have to remind myself I can afford to do something. Not being stressed about money makes impulse buying so much less a thing and impulse control is held in check. Maybe we need to stop blaming people for how they spend their money, and realize that people when put under stresses are less rational when it comes to spending creating a psychological trap they can't get out of. My spending habits have switch 180 degrees and I now have the head space and look back on financial behaviors that were terrible ideas, but the stress made them sound reasonable. Money truly can buy happiness, just up until your needs are met and you have enough to help others out too.

Well, I can switch to a flip phone, or I can try to struggle my way through a carrier like USCellular (actually impossible to trace), or I can stick with my Pixel, that defaults to a keyboard that knows what app I'm using, rendering even Signal's P2P 256-bit useless.

Yeah, I try to switch keyboards....

Even the hackiest of hackers can't keep everything under wraps. it can't be done.

So you've got to wash it, what underground? In your living room? During an eclipse? Is washing your truck in California going to invalidate the warranty?

Well that was quick. By 51-48-1, Senate votes that article one of the impeachment is unconstitutional because it contains no high crimes or misdemeanors. In agreement were all Democrats and all three Independents. Sen. Murkowski (R-AK) voted “present”.
in reply to Darwin Woodka

@darwinwoodka Given that the outcome was pre-ordained - not a single Senate Democrat or Independent caucusing with them ever indicated they’d do anything but vote to dismiss/table/whatever Schumer went with - Romney probably figured there was no political upside to putting himself on the line again like he did with the 2nd Trump impeachment.

anubis2814 reshared this.

Sen. Schumer moves that article two is also unconstitutional for the same reason - no high crimes or misdemeanors. First motion to prevent a vote on the Schumer motion is up now. Expect this round of votes to go about the like the ones for article one.

This sort of theft is financial vandalism that we all pay for. It pisses me off.
