@bytebro @The Whore of Blahbylon Replaced by the World wide web? Which died around 2010 when all the good services suddenly went public and needed to make a profit creating ad driven algorithms even if the content was absolutely toxic.

@anubis2814 Yes, but that came a tad later. Back then there wasn't really a "Web". Just a bunch of bulletin boards, some of which gave gateways to Usenet, which is exactly where the "Sept that never ended" meme came from.

I'm sure @JdeBP would have a view on this transition, because we were both there back in the day.

@bytebro @JdeBP @The Whore of Blahbylon Had to look that up and yeah it makes sense, kind of like how the fediverse really changed from tech and hobbyists to everyone in November. I think personally it was for the better as it was a bit dead but much more chaotic than it used to be, and new rules I never heard about enforced by the mastodon users.

If you took 20 years to train in any field of expertise you could literally climb a mountain in your spare time and still have an amazing life and still help thy neighbours.

There's an uncomfortable dissonance seeing Live Tiles on a vintage PC.

If you live in a place where meatspace is an escape at all, rather than still a wasteland, then good on you I guess.

Generally, the #clearnet has rotted. There are still some nice things to be found, but the corporate #enshittification cancer has metastasized.

There were fewer people connected, most of the users were from more educated social circles (who had money to buy a personal computer and pay for an Internet connection?) Although I'm one of those who live this paradox, I can't help thinking that there is a kind of elitism in it.. in any case, the Internet was the place where I found my friends for 10 years, and now it is simply impossible for me to make new friends online as I used to.I still can't get over this grief :(
