This feels appropriate for the second thing I've ever posted to mastodon.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I felt like that with blogs and RSS when it was everybody writing and not consolidated into big boxes
in reply to The Oatmeal

so happy to read you here (and by email, and on your site ❤️)
in reply to The Oatmeal

I shall continue to boost your cartoony goodness for the price of free as it continues to amuse me greatly 😁
in reply to The Oatmeal

that hit home at the time.. 25k facebook page total waste of effort... welcome to tooting!
in reply to The Oatmeal

I think about this cartoon often. It's appropriate now: we shouldn't be swapping one walled garden for another. The Adverse basically took all the conversations that were happening on people's blogs, and consolidated them. With the Fediverse, there's the possibility of taking that back, given more widespread use of ActivityPub.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I still don’t understand how people were voluntarily giving up control over their audience in favor of social networks. They basically lost their own little communities and gave them to multimillionaire owned money grabbing machines.
in reply to The Oatmeal

So happy to see you here! Also it's the opportunity to tell you I'm a big fan of your work since years (I know I'm not the only one but still happy to tell it out loud! 😂)
in reply to The Oatmeal

see also API’s, which used to be this super cool way of tying stuff together all over the internet and now is basically just another monetized monstrosity that’s heavily controlled (for good reason in some cases).
in reply to The Oatmeal

Hi there, glad to see you on Mastodon! Love your comics.

I don’t know if you’ll see this message or not, but Mastodon is different than other services you may have used before.

If you want to, on Mastodon, you can own the building. And the door locks. Just start your own instance. It takes some tech know-how, but it’s possible here, where it wasn’t possible on the other networks. Good luck!
in reply to The Oatmeal

Never not relevant. Feels like it needs a huge childbabymonster on top of the shiny tower, smashing it up.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I remember the first time you posted this comic, feels like ages ago. It's interesting how little changed in that time and even more people got consolidated to big platforms 😅
in reply to The Oatmeal

These Federated services feel like the re-birth of the old internet. Re-inventing chat, email, mySpace....
in reply to The Oatmeal

But have you had your own stolen content suggested to you by Facebook? Because I have. :-/
Unknown parent

The Oatmeal
@Nigma Thank you! That's one of my favorite games we've ever made.
in reply to The Oatmeal

in reply to The Oatmeal

I remember that... and so glad you're here! :ablobcatbongo: 💗
in reply to The Oatmeal

That's right, we traded freedom for something our parents could use easily.
in reply to The Oatmeal

It'll get better :] In any case, your email list works great!
in reply to The Oatmeal

I miss the geocities crappy frontpage made gif loades webpages era :sadness:
in reply to The Oatmeal

@alebianco What's the second thing on "Matt's Website"--"Netvibes"...? Just a general description of the times, or was that a specific thing?
in reply to The Oatmeal

I prefer the version including the Facebook notice asking you to pay so people who clicked to be notified, will be notified: exposing the blatant lies of the platform and Zucky selling you the community you built.

P.S: please add alt texts
in reply to The Oatmeal

Do you happen to remember when this was originally created? Feels like I've seen this a loooooong time ago
in reply to The Oatmeal

it’s insane. Granted Mastondon has a learning curve but if you put the time in and just learn a bit it’s actually seems pretty cool. :blobBongo:
in reply to The Oatmeal

ho yes, this is a legend here already ... (some ppl copied it !! ) specially the screengrab version with the proposal from meta to distribute it more advantageously ;D
in reply to The Oatmeal

Oh, you came by here !

This is my favorite educational strip when I try to explain the situation about corporate media to non-tech people :) I am fan of it <3

Welcome to the Fediverse, you found the exit, as well as the entrance to come back to a better home, interconnected again, while preserving you home website :)
in reply to The Oatmeal

the 'old' internet still works, we just have to go back to actually using it and not getting distracted by bells and whistles (and billionaires)
in reply to The Oatmeal

Yup, #Facebook is diabolical that way! I don't spend much time there b/c of things like that.
in reply to The Oatmeal

finding out that Mastodon has built-in RSS was amazing, some of us still use feeds every day.
in reply to The Oatmeal

😂 So true, Would love to see a comic with FB and TW as dumpster fires overseen by Zuck and Musk and the Boston Dynamic robot makes fun of them for being too robotic.
in reply to The Oatmeal

bring back rss for the masses.

Also… never too late to resurrect FOAF 😏
in reply to The Oatmeal

Truth. FB is one of the world's biggest bait-and-switch operations.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I've already seen more of your posts in the last two days than I have in two years 🫤
in reply to The Oatmeal

And the audience only gets a fraction of the content they want to see 💸📈
in reply to The Oatmeal

lol. yeah. remember that " LIke " economy? it was sort of a one way, give us your content and we'll charge you to have your audience back (vs the google model of we'll be on your content, and we'll give you a share of the rewards).
in reply to The Oatmeal

yeah. I miss when comics has sites and that that was part of the comic’s personality.
in reply to The Oatmeal

Cannot express how happy I am to see the Oatmeal here!
in reply to The Oatmeal

I love your work, however I can't boost it as the mods on my instance are very firm about about using alt text on images. Have you thought about the #Accessibility of your work?
in reply to The Oatmeal

OMG please follow me! There’s no way you would have followed me on Twitter (I’m not *that* cool) but I feel like maybe I’ve got a second chance at being accepted by the cool kids now. 🥹
in reply to The Oatmeal

the internet is a room full of people talking and very few people listening.
in reply to The Oatmeal

...if only the rest of the world understood this FACT.
in reply to The Oatmeal

Image description: Guy made a website and moved his followers to facebook. Then facebook shut their doors on him and he can't call his followers anymore.
in reply to The Oatmeal

as a small business owner I feel this everyday!
in reply to The Oatmeal

it really do be like that. Their economic model is not in your favor
in reply to The Oatmeal

Hey Oatmeal, how are you?

Followed you on Facebook, then Facebook got dumb, then I didn't see any of your posts anymore, then I stopped using Facebook, then I discovered you here.

What a story!
in reply to The Oatmeal

(looking in your profile for your website)

That’s cheating, I subscribe to email notifications and I have it bookmarked in browser(s), but your promotion could use more self…
in reply to The Oatmeal

Facebook used to be great for organizing events, now people I invite rarely even see the invites. It has become terrible.
in reply to The Oatmeal

An especially relevant comic right now.

(Btw, please consider adding Alt-text to your images. We have a lot of blind and partially sighted people here who would love to read your comics too!)
in reply to The Oatmeal

Glad to see you in the Fediverse! Still enjoy exploding kittens with friends 🙂
in reply to The Oatmeal

as a web designer and digital marketeer (hate that phrase) of 20 years…. Yes. Yes. And YES!

I spend so much time trying to explain this to clients. I’m just gonna show them this cartoon now.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I have been trying to find this excellent cartoon for multiple eternities, thanks for posting it!

(yes, I should have remembered it was one of yours, but…)
in reply to The Oatmeal

I strongly oppose the management choices EM has been making at the bird site, in style and substance, but this art illustrates the idea behind his catchy "freedom of speech but not reach".
in reply to The Oatmeal

I was annoyed that my bf would never see my posts in their news feeds so I would have to tag them. That was crazy.
in reply to The Oatmeal

Note to business owners - when your "website" is on Facebook, I for one will never see it.
in reply to The Oatmeal

thank sweet Jesus you're on Mastodon. Maybe I'll stay a bit longer.

#hope
#hope
in reply to The Oatmeal

Content warning: Justified Swearword.

in reply to The Oatmeal

That can 100% be applied to Twitter too, views are terrible on it
in reply to The Oatmeal

have you considered adding alt text for those who can't or won't see your images? I don't see descriptions for the first two, hilarious and on point, comics you posted. Welcome to Mastodon and keep up the great work!
in reply to The Oatmeal

what’s the favorite game you’ve ever made?
in reply to The Oatmeal

Good thing about the Masto is that by design it can’t (and won’t) become a walled garden. Our concept of being social at social media has long been grossly distorted and manipulated by big corporations algorithm’ing and monetizing our interactions to make a quick buck… and there’s so much we must unlearn in order to re-learn, if you catch my drift 😉
in reply to The Oatmeal

lmao open. Thee. Doooors. “I’m sorry. Use our stories feature instead”
in reply to The Oatmeal

agreed. I subscribed to your list, btw, and I never subscribe to lists.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I am very happy that I don't have to endure the bullshit of every idiot in the world. I like my Fediverse bubble 🤗.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I really missed some of your stuff and I'm checking my Feed pretty often. Will try to fix this.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I tried to order local custom pastries for Xmas. They are only on FB. I've never been on FB

In the photo albums I found a PDF that had a phone number (hidden by a "log in to FB" button, unfortunately) and an email address

They did take my order by email, but it took 3 days to place the order

When I got there, they couldn't find my order for some filing reason related to the above

Please, FTLOG, just make a regular website with a regular phone #. It's like $10/mo.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I think you nailed it. Its the latest version of bait and switch
in reply to The Oatmeal

It would be friendly to add alt text, so that everyone could engage with it.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I’m not sure when you first wrote this comic, but it feels like years ago that I saw it and I’ve been trying to track it down ever since - it so perfectly captures the marketing approach of social media sites, and it’s horrid. (The social media, not you of course!)
in reply to The Oatmeal

You forgot webrings.

"If you like my stuff, you can go left or right to my friends' stores also which also have cool stuff."
in reply to The Oatmeal

we might be in need of a Twitter version of this now :P
in reply to The Oatmeal

REBUILD ANEW! I say fuck web 2.0 and let's all make HTML 4 websites withs 8 bit colour tiled gif backgrounds and web rings and guest books and shit.

You remember the joy?

I remember the joy.

Studio 8502 :verified: reshared this.

in reply to The Oatmeal

That darn Facebook! Good thing that Twitter will never be like that.
in reply to The Oatmeal

indeed, reaching each other is what is all about! Best we don't let large companies get in our way 😉
in reply to The Oatmeal

Nobody could predict that giving the control of your communications and content to a third party coud go wrong, right ?
in reply to The Oatmeal

I miss the "every site has RSS for easy follow" era!
in reply to The Oatmeal

it's why mailing lists are still so valuable to anyone building an audience
in reply to The Oatmeal

god i miss having everything organized through RSS, it was like having my own personalized newspaper in the morning

mostly comics, just like a real newspaper should be
in reply to The Oatmeal

So true -- that's why it's best to post on a variety of social media. The tech titans are all schmucks.
in reply to The Oatmeal

Yes, this is still being boosted, months later. Which says a lot.
in reply to The Oatmeal

hey Oatmeal, I love your stuff, but I won’t boost posts without alt text. Accessibility is important. Please consider adding alt text to the media you post. Thanks.
in reply to The Oatmeal

@AeonMach That’s the main reason I left Facebook a few years back. My website had 50,000 followers, but I was lucky if a post reached a few hundred of them. Facebook made it so there was no point being there.
in reply to The Oatmeal

wooo the best draw of the week, simple and amazing ! pure and essentially the current state of internet.
in reply to The Oatmeal

I think the best way to handle blogs and followers is to have your blog support RSS and ActivityPub so people on the Fediverse can easily follow it. And non-fedi followers can comment by making an account on your blog that's secretly also a fediverse account.

The only downside is that now you're not just hosting a blog but also a fediverse server.

It would surprise me if the system for this didn't already exist.

in reply to The Oatmeal

I just registered a domain, and started hand-coding it, so that I can have control over how my stuff is presented and used, without any advertising - the way I want it.

Now when I saw your cartoon, I realized that is exactly how I was doing back in 1998.

Time to bring back geocities 🤔
